The 12th Annual Xeriscape Conference promises to be an experience
Conservationists, garden writers, experts in xeric gardening, and other noted speakers on water and land conservation will be making presentations at the 12th Annual Xeriscape Conference March 8 and 9 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The theme of the conference is “Desert to Oasis, Back to the Basics,” and will include Sandra Postel, author of Pillar of Sand: Can The Irrigation Miracle Last?, and of Last Oasis: Facing Water Scarcity as the keynote speaker.
She is also the co-author (along with Brian Ricter) of Rivers of Life: Managing Water for People and Nature (Island Press, 2003).
Topics at the conference will include:
Understanding and Managing the Desert Ecosystem by Allan Savory. Savory is an African land activist and expert on desertification.
Restoring Arid Lands by Sid Goodloe, farming and ranching expert
Urban Dryland Management by Doug Collister, president and founder of the High Desert Investment Corporation
Precipitation-Only Gardening by Judith Phillips. She is the author of a long list of books on desert gardening and water conservation.
Interdependency of Energy and Water in the Landscape by Ron Pate
Diversity in Public Landscapes: Carol Franklin. She has been a leader in the exploration and development of sustainable landscapes since 1975.
Transitional Zone Landscapes: Jim Knopf. He is an author and expert on xeriscaping and has developed sizeable research on urban water use.
Efficient Irrigation for the Long Term: Joran Viers, horticulturist with NMSU and garden writer.
Global Climate Change and Desert Landscapes: Eileen Clausen. She is the President of the Pew Center for Global Climate Change and Strategies for the Global Environment, and has served as Director of Atmospheric Programs at the EPA, and Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for Oceans, International Environment and Scientific Affairs.
Sustainable Architecture: Ed Mazria. He is a world-renowned architect and lecturer, as well as an author.
Perennials in the Oasis: Marcie Tatroe. She is an author, lecturer and garden designer.
