From Latin annus, “year.”
Annuals are plants that germinate, flower and die in one year. Some annuals may live several years, if they are prevented from setting seed. Some plants that are considered annuals (such as vegetables like tomatoes) are actually tropical perennials that will not survive in cold weather.
