From the Greek proto, meaning first, and zoa, meaning animal.

Protozoa are the smallest of animals. One-celled and reproducing like larger animals, they breath and move. They are most prevalent in moist environments. Besides consuming organic matter and converting it into nutrients, they also contribute their bodies to organic soils. Creating a soil that can retain some water will encourage protozoan development.
