Plants can be either dioecious or monecious.
Individual species which have separate male and female plants, and are either one sex or the other, are called dioecious (dy-EE-shus). Monecious (moan-EE-shus) refers to plants which have both male and female flowers (stamins and pistels) on the same plant.
