Ancient agrarian cultures living in or near deserts have used olla gardening methods for milennia.

Olla(pronounced oh-yah)gardening is an ancient method of drip irrigation, thought to have originated in Northern Africa and brought to the Americas by the Spanish, is accomplished by filling buried unglazed clay pots with water, allowing the water to seep slowly into the surrounding soil. This process is still in use today in many parts of the world, including the southwest U.S.
