Slow-release fertilizer may be the best way to provide plants with a balance of nutrients.
Slow-release means just that. These fertilizers are designed to release nutrients at the same rate as they are taken by the plant. Less nutrients are wasted that way, and the plant is assured of a steady diet of nutrients. A word of caution: don't add slow release fertilizer onto trees and shrubs in late summer. It may encourage late-season growth which may not harden off. This late-season growth can sustain substantial cold weather damage.
