Ice and snow can sublimate,
In chemistry, sublimation (from the Latin, sublimis - lifted up) means a substance transforms from a solid to a gas without passing through a liquid stage. In many low humidity areas, snow and ice can sublimate. When this happens, little if any water is retained in the soil.
