Tap water is merely water that is taken from a tap or faucet.

Tap water can come from a variety of places. Many rural homes have their own wells, and pump water from aquifers many feet below the ground. Larger municipalities and cities have either larger wells which take water from an aquifer, or use large reservoirs or other surface water sources (lakes and rivers for instance) to furnish water to the population. This water may be treated with a variety of compounds, or may be heavy in salts or minerals.
