January Chores for Desert Gardens

Caring for your plants

Cold outside or not, there are some gardening activities you can do now.

Here’s a list of things you can be doing right now that should give you some sense of satisfaction, whether it’s snowing or it’s just cold right now.

  • Get plenty of seed catalogues. Not only are most of the old standards in there, but you are certain to find new varieties of plants and some older varieties that you just never noticed before. Perusing seed catalogues is also a great way to get new ideas for landscaping (or xeriscaping) your desert garden.
  • Mulch. If you haven’t done so already, shred the limbs of that old Christmas tree and put it in your compost pile. If you don’t have a compost pile, then just use it as mulch for your plants.
  • Scout your tree branches and limbs again for signs of egg masses or over wintering insects. If you find scale, egg masses or over wintering non-beneficial insects, spray with dormant or horticultural oil.
  • Visit area greenhouses. See what plants are there, and then talk to the staff about what’s coming in. Also, some greenhouses and nurseries are starting to sponsor gardening workshops this time of year, and many of them are extremely worthwhile attending.
  • Oil and sharpen tools.
  • Check with area gardening societies, Master Gardening groups, community associations and extension services about upcoming spring plant sales. (Many areas have tree sales within the next few months.)
