March Desert Garden Jobs

Itching to get in the garden?

Here are some chores that will help scratch that itch.

If you live in the high desert, you’ve been winter bound for months. In the low desert, you’re seeing some signs of spring. Where ever you live and garden though, you can still do some gardening chores.

If they haven’t started to bud, you can still prune non-stone fruit trees, grapes and raspberry vines. You can also begin a spray regimen at this time.

Start slow-growing and cool-season seeds like onions, leeks, parsley, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, eggplant and peppers.

Also, begin moving mulch from around your roses. If the ground is unfrozen, you can move any soil mounds from around grafted joints.

If it’s not snowing, and there is no snow on the ground, you can plant peas around March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day).

Also, begin horticultural oil applications where needed to control pests.
