Some plants are highly tolerant to saline soil.

There are woody plants, grass varieties and even some vegetables, which are salt tolerant.


Just because you have high salinity in your soil doesn’t mean you can’t have a garden. There are a number of plants that are highly tolerant or moderately tolerant of high amounts of salt in the soil.

Top Six Salt-Tolerant Woody Plants

  1. Aleppo Pine (pinus halepensis)
  2. Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera)
  3. Guayule (Parthenium argentatum)
  4. Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)
  5. Rosemary (Romarinus officianalis)
  6. Spindle Tree (Euonymus patens)

Top Six Salt-Tolerant Grass Species

  1. Alkali Sacaton (Sporobolus airoides)
  2. Alkaligrass, also known as Nutall (Puccinellia airoides)
  3. Bermudagrass (Cynodon Dactylon)
  4. Desert Saltgrass (Distichlis stricta)
  5. Tall Wheatgrass (A. elongatum
  6. Fairway crested Wheatgrass (A. cristatum)

Top Four Salt-Tolerant or Moderately Salt-Tolerant Vegetables

  1. Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) Moderately Tolerant
  2. Asparagus (Asparagus oficianalis) Tolerant
  3. Red Beet (Beta vulgaris) Moderately tolerant
  4. Squash, Zucchini (C. Pepo Melopepo) Moderately tolerant

If your soil has been proven to be highly saline, then only plant the “tolerant” plants.
